February 17, 2004Finding A CampI know it's nowhere near summer, but I did want to tell you about this nice application for finding a camp at The American Camping Association's Find a Camp at http://find.acacamps.org/finding_a_camp.cgi . I like it because there are an almost goony number of options for searching for camps. When I was a child, forty or fifty thousand years ago, I seem to recall there was swimming... and ... perhaps... minigolf. (For which we had to walk backwards fifteen miles through the snow.) But there are apparently many more options now. From the front search page you can choose many different ways to browse offerings, from activity type (over sixty) to cultural focus to camp name to location. But if you go straight to the advanced page search you can find all that, at the same time, with additional search options such as length, price, co-ed or not, and camper age. Remembering happier days at Le Chateau Du Putt Putt, I searched for a golf camp. I got over 400 results. Results include name of the camp, city and state, and a brief description. Click on the name of the camp and you'll get additional information including extensive offline contact information, description, session length, featured activities, and other activities. In addition to the camp search, this site also has information on other camp issues including dealing with homesickness, evaluating camp needs, and preparing your child for camp.
