LOC Hears America Singing

The Library of Congress has announced a new Web site, I Hear America Singing. And despite the fact that it's described as a portal I'll forgive it. You can get it at http://www.loc.gov/ihas/ .

The site was developed to integrate the various collections and materials of the Library of cCongress through a single site. It's not done -- the site says "Content appealing to the K-12 community of teachers and students will be added in future releases" -- but there's already some collections here, including:

Patriotic Melodies -- The stories behind some of America's "patriotic sounds," which includes the expected like Anchors Aweigh and Yankee Doodle, but also songs like This Land Was Made For You and Me. Background is included on each song, and most songs have sheet music and recordings (sometimes several different sets of recordings) available.

Life in Nineteenth-Century Ohio -- No, it's not a new reality TV series. It's information about the musical life of Cincinnati in the mid-late 1800s. Musical information is divided into several categories including Singing Schools and Temperance.
