February 23, 2004Northern Ireland Buildings DatabaseThe Environment and Heritage Service has a database of over 9,000 historic buildings in Northern Ireland, available at http://www.ehsni.gov.uk/built/mbr/buildings_database/build.asp . You may search it by identifying number, keyword, council, or ward. I searched for Lisburn and found 54 pages of results, presented in a table that shows number, council, ward, address, currently building use (church, home, etc.) and building grade. There's also a magnifying glass icon for each listing. Click on it and you'll get a page template of additional information with varying levels of completeness (those listings highlighted in green in the search results have more information.) The template has space for dates of listings, architectual features, architects, and criteria for listings, but information varies depending on the listing. The Environment and Heritage Service also offers a Northern Ireland Sites and Monuments Database ( http://www.ehsni.gov.uk/built/mbr/monuments_database/mons.asp ), a register of buildings at risk in Northern Ireland ( http://www.ehsni.gov.uk/built/mbr/barni_database/risk.shtml ) and information on building preservation.
