February 11, 2004Virtual Detroit Offers Thousands of ImagesThe Wayne State University Virtual Motor City Project is a collection of 15,000 images from the Reuther Library?s Detroit News Collection. It's available at http://www.lib.wayne.edu/resources/special_collections/local/vmc/ and it is sweet. There's project information on the front page but if I were you I'd go straight to "Search this Collection". When you do that you'll see that you have plenty of options besides searching. You can browse by topic (from Automotive Industry to Style and Entertainment). You can browse by decade (1890s to 1990s.) You can even, if you're far more patient than I, browse the over 27,000 records. But perhaps you really do want to search. In that case you can search by title, photographer, date, and notes. A all-keyword search for "Aretha" found 15 results. Results are presented with caption and thumbnail. Click on the thumbnail and you'll get the choice of five different image sizes (the largest one is really big!)
