April 19, 2004Microsoft Opens Up Its Own Sandbox of Search TechnologyAll of a sudden there are all kinds of fun search experiments out there. Microsoft is opening its own with the MSN Sandbox, available at http://sandbox.msn.com . What's here varies a lot. There's a pointer to the MSN Newsbot, a link to the MSN Toolbar, a link to 3 degrees, social interaction software (which the site describes like this: "3 is software that connects a small group of family and close friends, people who know and trust one another, so they can do fun things together in a whole new way. 3 is a beta test of an innovative application that lets users connect online, extending real- world social interactions.") There's also Netscan -- information on Usenet Newsgroups including postings, replies, posters, crossposts, etc. Very interesting! And finally there's a pointer to TerraServer, a huge collection of maps and aerial photographs. If you follow Microsoft/MSN at all, some of this will be familiar to you, but there's enough new/interesting here to keep you occupied. I'll be keeping an eye on this sandbox.
