April 06, 2004New York Times offers Hirschfeld CollectionYeah yeah, I know it's all about relaunching the theater section and there are archived reviews and news and all that but what I REALLY want you to know is that the New York Times has an online archive of 93 drawings by Al Hirschfeld. And you can get to it at http://theater.nytimes.com/ref/theater/hirschfeld/index.html?rf=index.html . Who was Al Hirschfeld? He was a cartoonist, a caricaturist. In 1945, to celebrate the birth of his daughter, he started hiding the name "Nina" in his artwork. (I'll get back to this in a minute.) From the home page of the archive you may browse by person (Jane Alexander to Irene Worth), show, or date. Click on a thumbnail, showing part of the picture, and you get a bigger version of the picture... .. but not big enough. While this archive is a wonderful idea, THE PICTURES AREN'T BIG ENOUGH TO FIND THE NINAS! Maybe it would be different if it were newsprint, but I wish the pictures were a bit larger so visitors could both enjoy the detail of his art and find the Ninas.
