May 03, 2004CNET Announces "Music Discovery Service"CNET has announced a new "music discovery" and download service, now available at http://music.download.com . With the dismantling of MP3.com I was very happy to see a new alternative available, though it looks like it's going to take a while to fill out. The new site looks rather like MP3.com without the teeny text and what I call the Boom Ambiance. You know the Boom Ambiance. That's when pages had a lot of blinky/animated things, and every element on the page was suffused with so much emotion and excitement that you became afraid they'd fly off the page and right up your nose. Perhaps that's too visual a description. At any rate, Download Music offers several categories of music on the front page as well as a search engine. A quick search for two of my old MP3.com favorites, Kevin Pike and Sworn, got no joy, alas. So I started browsing through the categories. This site has a lot of sub categories. Though I like electronic music I find myself mystified by some of these subs. Gabber? (Gabber Gabber Hey!) IDM? The mind boggles. (Or possibly Gabbers.) Finally I settled on the page of DJ Cabbage, who has no artist information on his page but does have seven songs. Be sure to look at the More Info tab for the songs to see notes from the artist. Songs download directly and do not require registration. While none of DJ Cabbage's songs were marked as such, I did notice there were some songs marked with an "Explicit" logo.
