June 02, 2004ProQuest and NYTimes Offering New York Times Archive Back to 1851ProQuest and the New York Times have teamed up to offer a digital archive of the NYT, back to 1851, directly to the consumer market. The archive will be accessible via the NYT's Web site ( http://www.nytimes.com/1851archive ) on a pay-per-view basis. This page covers 1851-1995 (1995-present are available at http://query.nytimes.com/search/advanced?srchst=nyt ) which includes 15 million articles. They're searchable by general keyword, author, or headline. Advertisements are searchable as well as articles, and the search can be narrowed by date range. A search for Internet in 1991 and 1992 found 24 results. Clicking on the headline will give you additional information about the article and the first paragraph. If you want the whole article, you'll have to purchase it. Articles cost $2.95 each, or you can buy "packs" -- 4 for $7.95, 10 for $15.95, or 25 for $25.95.
