August 04, 2004Topix Redesigns, Offers Some New StuffTopix has redesigned and offers some new sources, including more news sources (up to over 7,000 now) and other goodies. The home page hasn't changed, though -- it's still at http://www.topix.net . I was crabbing yesterday about very basic news alerts, and I was pleased to find out that Topix now offers e-mail alerts for all their topic categories (all 150,000 of their topic categories. Criminy.) Unfortunately getting the alert is not clear; you must go to the category and then go to the nav bar and choose Get News Alerts. Since it's part of the nav bar, it's a big unclear. I thought I would be choosing all the alerts I wanted, or getting the procedure for the alerts. How about moving that to the top of the category listing, Topix? Topix is also offering RSS feeds of their search results (do a search, look on the left nav for the orange XML button, click it) as well as separately-listed press releases (though I don't see a press release category). Finally, all those lovely generated RSS feeds are now RSS 2.0. Topix is crowded and a little overwhelming with information. It'll be nice to break out the topics in which I'm interested by RSS feed.
