October 29, 2004Come See the Digitized Side of SearsBefore there was Wal-Mart and Target, there was Sears. There was the appliance line and the shoe department and the Toughskins. There was the Wish Book. Oh, the Wish Book. Now you can relive the annals of the department store that will always in my mind be associated with 1971 at Sears Archives ( http://www.searsarchives.com ). There's several parts to this site. You can wander through a narrative history of Sears. You can check out the Vincent Price Collection of Fine Art (no, I'm not kidding.) You can learn all about the Sears Homes. You can learn about the history of Sears catalogs, but there's not much in the line of digitized catalogs here (which is a pity; the site says "Edgar Rice Burroughs, who later wrote the Tarzan series, worked for Sears" and I want to see his copy writing. Look at the Brands page for some catalogs images.) If you're a fan of pop culture or retail culture you'll enjoy this site. Posted to Business | TrackBack
