October 20, 2004New UK-Specific Search Engine -- UKWizzIf the ratio of silly name to success is any indication, UK-specific search engine UKWizz is well on the way. It's available at http://www.ukwizz.com . UKWizz is designed as a UK-only search engine, but as their Web page says, "Our index is not 100% UK specific, although our technology is designed to index as high a percentage of UK web content as possible." A search for Wales found 13245 results, with most of the results on the first page coming from UK pages (the other ones were from .com domains and it wasn't clear where they were coming from.) Advanced search allows you to do some date searching and sort results by newest to oldest, but other than that is limited in how it can search. In addition to a search engine the site also has a rather sparsely-populated directory (which doesn't look like it's built on the Open Directory Project). With a search engine that's obviously pretty new and still filling out, you may be wondering why I'm covering it. Because of all the goodies you can find under the "More" tab on the front page! There's several more UK-specific searches that are under production and ought to be a lot of fun when they're ready, including news search and blogging search. One to keep an eye on.
