State Fair Taste Test -- Deep Fried Oreos

One of the reasons I enjoy the Fair so much is the food. Yes, the biscuits and grits in the morning. Yes, the sausage and onions. Yes, the sweet corn. (Wow, the sweet corn.) But in addition to those things, how about the foods you just can't get every day? I don't know about you but there aren't many other places I can get emu burgers, deep fried twinkies, friend pickles, gator-on-a-stick (from two different places!), and blueberry cheesecake flavored almonds.

A deep-fried Oreo I was feeling reasonably adventurous today and decided to try a deep-friend Oreo. The deep fried candy bars seemed a bit much and I've already tried the deep fried Twinkies (verdict -- tasty but so sweet they'll make your teeth buzz.) You can buy fried Oreos at several places around the Fair; the place I got mine had them for .75 each or 5 for $3.

Let us consider the deep-fried Oreo, covered well with powdered sugar. Looks rather harmless, doesn't it? I was expecting a crispy internal Oreo with some melted filling.

Which is not what I got. Instead it was -- it wasn't mushy, but it was very non-solid. The taste was mostly cookie and powdered sugar, and a little bit of dough, and it really melts in your mouth. You couldn't really taste the filling, however, and if you tried to pull the fried Oreo apart to get to the filling you'd probably burn your fingers.

A deep-fried Oreo As you can see, once you get the dough off the Oreo innards look pretty familiar.

If you want to try a different sweet treat and the fair -- something smaller than a fried candy bar and a little more offbeat than the traditional candy apple -- a deep fried Oreo is a quick, tasty bite.
