October 18, 2004The International Type IndexAs I think I've said before, I like playing with fonts. I like playing with fonts because they make me feel like I'm actually doing something design-y, though actually I couldn't design my way out of a wet sack. If you feel the same way, do I have the site for you. The International Type Index ( http://www.point-central.com/ ) aims to "build a searchable database of all fonts from all foundries, from all the world, to the benefit of both users AND authors." Currently there are over 800 fonts in the database. For font wonks, there are several articles here, including ten steps to creating a typeface, different kinds of type, and a portrait of a type family. You can search for fonts by keyword, or browse the most-recent or most-requested ones. I searched for "letter" and got six results, from "Gothic Love Letter" to "Letterine Teatro." Search results include the name of the font and a sample of the font. Click on the font name and you'll get a more extensive sample, along with creation information, ratings, and formats and platforms. You'll also learn whether the font is free or commercial and get pointers to purchasing/downloading the font. In addition to the database of fonts the same site also sponsors the International Type Museum (ITM). This list of over 100 fonts is pulled from font designers -- mostly hobbyists -- who for one reason or another don't wish to support their own sites. The sites are gathered here and the font's made freely available, from a collection from A.D.T. to Weedhopper Press. Another great place to research fonts. Posted to Fonts | TrackBack
