Civil War Soldiers and Sailors System

Holy cow. How did I miss THIS? How-da-heck-did-I-miss-this? "This" is the Civil War Soldiers and Sailors System, at http://www.itd.nps.gov/cwss/ . It contains information on information on over six million soldiers and sailors from 44 states and territories who were involved in the Civil War.

From the front page there are separate searches for soldiers and sailors. Search options include first and last name, whether they were Union or Confederate, state of origin, unit number, and function (cavalry, engineering, sharpshooting, etc.)

My search for soldiers named Turlington in Virginia had ten results. Results include solider name, side, function (not always available) and regiment. Click on the regiment name and you may get history about that unit -- it's not always available. (For this search regiment history was available most of the time.) Click on the solider name and you'll get basic transcribed information including company, entering and exiting rank, notes (often there are no notes) and film number.

In addition to soldier and sailor information this site also contains information on over 350 Civil War battles, records from two Civil War prisons, and a limited amount of cemetery records. Wow.
