December 07, 2004Georgia Tech Offers Moving Image Collection ProjectGeorgia Tech now has a project to catalog and in some cases offer moving images from collections around the world. The initial rollout is available at http://mic.imtc.gatech.edu/ . There are two search offerings here; a search for collections and a search for archives. I ran the same search on each one. I search for "San Francisco" in the collections search found 843 results. Result listings included the title of the moving image, format, and the holding institution. Click on the title and you'll get a lot of additional information, including language, an abstract describing the film, and the credits. A search for "San Francisco" in the archives search found one result, the San Francisco Bay Area Television Archives, so I expanded that search to California. I got five results. Results listed include the name of the archives, URL, subjects and formats collected, sales policy, and loan policy. An "about this collection" link takes you to additional information including e-mail and phone contacts if available. In addition to catalogs of holdings and archive information, this site also contains several sets of information about moving images for both archivists and general users, as well as an archives browser that lets you search for archives by name, genre, location, and formats collected. The site is still in development. See the article at http://gtresearchnews.gatech.edu/newsrelease/movies.htm for an overview of what's being planned for this resource.
