February 28, 2005Historical Pictures of the Florida KeysThere's a great article in the Miami Herald about a new collection of 900 photographs of the Florida Keys. These photographs represent over 90 years of history, from the 1890s to the 1980s. You can see them at http://www.mile-markers.org/ . This site is Flash-based, and worked fine for me in Firefox. There are two ways you can go through the photographs; browsing or by searching. The browsing option takes you to a series of mile markers from Key Largo to Key West. Click on a marker and you'll get a narration about that area including images from postcards and photographs. Some places, like Pigeon Key, have only a single image associated with them. The search is by simple keyword, though you can search in several different fields including title, description, and date. An all-fiends search for cigar found 22 results, with photographs ranging from a picture of cigar makers at work from around 1900 to a cigar factory postcard from the 1930s.
