March 07, 2005Some Updates for Google DesktopA few things going on with Google Desktop. First of all if you look at Google Labs ( http://labs.google.com ) you'll note that Google Desktop has now "graduated" from the Labs. And with that comes some new features, which you can read all about at http://desktop.google.com/ . Google Desktop, which heretofore has indexed Outlook/Outlook Express, AOL Instant Messenger, Internet Explorer, Text, Word, Excel, and PowerPoint, has added some new formats that it can indexed. Added to the list on the site are Netscape Mail/Thunderbird, Netscape/Firefox/Mozilla (woo hoo!), PDF, Music, Images, and Video. For music, images, and video, Google Desktop is searching the file's metadata. There are also plug-ins available for Google Desktop now, which add search functionality to Google Desktop. Items available at the moment include plug-ins for searching Trillian, help files, mIRC files, and OpenOffice and StarOffice documents. The plug-ins page is available at http://desktop.google.com/plugins.html ; developers interested in writing their own plug-ins can get information and download an SDK at http://desktop.google.com/developer.html . Finally, it looks like Google Desktop has added a few languages. I think I remember that it was only available in English before, but now it's available in English as well as Chinese (Simplified and Traditional) and Korean. Now that it indexes Firefox pages, I may just have to download and install this thing... Posted to Search Engines-Google | TrackBack
