April 20, 2005Old Copies of Salt Lake Tribune Going OnlineCopies of the Salt Lake Tribune from the 1870s are now available online, with plans afoot to put papers from the 1880s and 1890s online as well. You can read all about the plans at http://www.sltrib.com/ci_2655500, but you can read the papers at http://www.digitalnewspapers.org . There are many papers here -- this project has been going on for a while now and I've mentioned it in other contexts -- but the SLT page is at http://www.lib.utah.edu/digital/unews/slt.html. If you're interested in genealogy, you may pick a year and browse births, deaths, and marriages. If your interests are broader you may also do a headline or keyword search. I did a headline search for mining and got 2670 results. Results are shown with a thumbnail and the title of the article. Clicking on the thumbnail or the title will get you a PDF of the article itself, which is readable for the most part. You also have the option to add the document to your "Favorites" (I would guess this is cookie-based) or do a more advanced search which allows you to search by specific collections and across a huge number of fields.
