April 05, 2005Yahoo Makes Changes to Y!QRemember that Y!Q service for publishers and searchers? It's a service available that allows you to add context-based searching to your site. You can see my earlier writeup about it here. Yahoo has announced some changes to it in their blog. The changes include the ability to add a default search, the ability to add more site context (to better define results) and the ability to add content into the overlay, whether it be a message to users or CSS or whatever. You can get the documentation at http://yq.search.yahoo.com/splash/embed.html , but while you're here take a look at the optional controls available, which are quite sweet. You can restrict your searched properties in a Y!Q form to a specific list, which would make it easy (though time consuming) to create pages of content which are gateways to searching very specific sets of resources. Of course, the downside for me is that using Y!Q requires a little JavaScript line in a page's header, but I'm intrigued enough that I think I'm going to fiddle with my MT templates a little and make it happen.
