May 23, 2005New South Africa Search EngineThere's a new search engine available for South Africa called Funnel. It's available at http://www.funnel.co.za/funnel.php , and it indexes/searches only South African sites (its tag line reads "Proudly searching ONLY South Africa!") That in itself is an index of over 3 million pages. The front page allows simple keyword search, or you can go to the advanced search and search for file formats, for pages linked to pages, for pages within a certain Web site, etc. I did a simple keyword search for education. A little slowly (I think this site is getting a lot of press at the moment) I got a very Googlesque page of 288,495 results. (In comparison, searching Google for education site:za gives over a million results.) Result pages include snippets, links to cached pages (undated cache pages) and links to similar pages. This search engine looks okay; nothing revolutionary in syntax but as far as I could tell the relevance is good. It is running a little slow -- getting a lot of traffic?
