June 29, 2005Google Releases API for Google MapsIn a move that should increase late night Web resource mashups and caffeine consumption on a grand scale, Google has announced an API for its Google Maps service. Information is available at http://www.google.com/apis/maps/ . Note that there are restrictions on the use of the API; it may be used on any Web site that is "free to consumers." Google also reserves the right to put ads on the maps. People were doing pretty terrific things without an API, but this new interface makes it possible to do them more "legally" and I expect more easily. Prospective map mashers will have to sign up for a Google Maps API "key", and if they expect more than 50,000 page views per day will need to get permission to use the API. (Which strikes me as kinda tough -- I mean, one Slashdotting and you'd be toast.) Google also notes "Google will upgrade the API periodically, and you must update your site to use the new versions of the API. The Maps team will notify you of updates on Google Code and the Maps API discussion group. We'll try to give you a month to make the transition, during which both versions of the API will be available." (What I wouldn't give to read the same warning about the original Google API!) The API site provides documentation and example code, as well as a discussion forum. Posted to Search Engines-Google | TrackBack
