June 09, 2005Visual Comparison of Google, Yahoo ResultsI find visual comparisons annoying. I'm a text-crawler. But this one I find less annoying than most. While this site is one that uses Flash to show search results, it's not done in a way that makes me want to put a cool cloth over my eyes and go lay down for an hour. It's a straightforward visual comparison that just happens to use Flash. Thank goodness. Try it yourself at http://www.langreiter.com/exec/yahoo-vs-google.html . Run a search. You'll get two rows of dots as results. Mouseover the dots to get URLs. Click on the dots to visit the URLs. Some of the dots are blue and are connected to the other row with a line. That enables you to compare a position of a result URL on one row of dots (Google) with the position on another row of dots (Yahoo.) The first results start on the left. What's interesting is to see how little overlap there is for some words. And with other words, there's a ton of overlap at the top of the search results, but after that it just kind of falls apart. The next time someone tells you there's no need to use more than one search engine, point them to this resource and have them search for Siberry and look at the lack of overlap in the results.
