Rhode Island Offers New Site With Much RSS Goodness

The state of Rhode Island has announced new features of its Web site along with major support for RSS. But of course it's still available at http://www.ri.gov .

Let's do the RSS feeds first. On the front page you'll see an orange RSS button for the highlights of the site and for government press releases. (You'll also see a blue REX button -- more about that in a moment.) As you progress through the major sections of the site you'll see other feeds -- one for the last ten registered corporations, one for a tourism events calendar, and so on. (There are tons more RI feeds than this; you can get a roundup at http://www.ri.gov/rex/feeds.php .)

And the REX? That stands for Rhode Island eGovernment Exchange, which is a project for the government agencies of Rhode Island to explore the idea of sharing information with the public and each other using technologies like RSS and XML. Nice idea. I'll be watching with interest. Where's its RSS feed? Did I miss it?

RSS is not the only new thing on the site. There's also a new search engine that integrates results from over 130 different agency sites. You can get to the new search engine at http://www.ri.gov/search/ ; this page also has pointers to other search engines and databases relevant to Rhode Island research.
