July 26, 2005The 1911 Canadian Census OnlineOkay, the good news is that the 1911 Canadian Census is available online. The bad news is that it's only searchable by geographic location and is not searchable by name. You can check it out at http://www.collectionscanada.ca/archivianet/1911/index-e.html . The search form allows you to specify a province/territory and a geographic location, along with how many references you want to see per page (from 5 to "MAX", which I guess would be everything.) A detailed search lets you add a few more options including microfilm reel numbers and keywords. I stuck with the basic search and looked for results in the Yukon. I got 25 results. The results don't list families but instead list the province, district name, number, and description. Each search result has a Associated Images link which provides the census data pages in MrSID and PDF file formats. The PDF pages are well scanned, but of course the handwriting is sometimes a little difficult to read. (Am I really seeing Peter Snowshoe living in a tent with his wife and lotsa kids? I can't be reading that last name right...) Posted to Countries-Canada | TrackBack
