Historic Colorado Newspapers

The Stephen H. Hart Library at the Colorado History Museum has made available online about a third of its historic newspaper collection. The newspapers span 1859-1923 and cover more than 75 newspapers across 20 Colorado cities. You can see the papers at http://host1.cdpheritage.org/newspapers/ .

The papers range from the Akron Weekly Pioneer Press to the White Pine Cone. Once you've decided to search the papers you'll be asked whether you're using dialup or broadband (and possibly warned about your browser if you're not using IE.)

After that, you'll get a several-tabbed page that will allow you to browse by issue or date, search by keyword, and also explore issues and recent searches. I did an all-publication, all-times search for the word "fred". I got 42781 results in a table showing the date, the source, and a thumbnail of the relevant section of the page.

Under the source part of the results you'll see a couple of icons. One of them will open the entire page for you. One of them will save that page to a MyCollection set of articles for you, and the other one will open just the article in a pop-up window.

Readability of the articles varied a lot. Some of them were so blurry they were all but impossible to read, while other ones were very readable. Worth a browse.
