September 21, 2005Connect Wikipedia Articles to Meatspace with PlaceopediaMore data mashup fun. Placeopedia connects Wikipedia articles to their respective locations on a Google Map. And though the map on the front page of http://www.placeopedia.com/ is of the UK, there are actually linked items from all over the world. In addition to the map, the front page also contains recent articles which have been linked to locations. At the top of the page you may get a random location, add a place, or a search for a location. (You can also browse around the map if you'd rather search that way, but it's a bit time consuming.) I searched for Phoenix Arizona. I got a map of Phoenix with two markers on it, and the titles of the articles which were linked on the right side of the page. Clicking on the title brings you a closer map with a marker link to the Wikipedia article. Nice idea. I would LOVE to seem similar functionality made available for other Wikis -- Yellowikis springs immediately to mind.
