September 21, 2005Dumbfind Search Engine Enters Beta 3If you're into search engines which offer results refinement, or you like exploring more results within the domain of search results pages, check out search engine Dumbfind, which is now entering its third beta at http://www.dumbfind.com . Dumbfind offers two query boxes instead of one; the first one is for the main search query while the second is for the "topic" of the search, be it music, programming, cars, etc (you don't have to use the topics box.) You can also specify how many results you want to come from the same domain -- the "sub results" option can be set from 1 to 20. I did a search for ruby, topic search programming. The first two results were from Japan and France, which was interesting but might mean that there needs to be a switch to specify the language of search results (I didn't see any kind of advanced search / preferences page available, sorry syntax wonks.) Sub results from the same domain appear indented beneath the first domain result. Results seem to work best when the topic you specify is categorical -- I searched for Everquest, topic addiction, and got a dog's breakfast. The search alcohol, topic addiction, worked better but not as well as top-level topics like music, cars, history, etc. The "formal name" for a category seems to work better as well -- mustang, topic cars, didn't work as well as mustang, topic automobile.
