September 30, 2005Web 2.0: The Intersection of THIS Service and THAT ServiceOh, this is nice. The Web 2.0 Mashup Matrix, available at http://www.programmableweb.com/matrix# , shows you the intersections between different APIs in a grid. Go to an API listing on one axis, and follow it across the other axis to see how some tools use that API's data in conjunction with other APIs. This front page shows a small matrix with 12 services on it, including Amazon, eBay, and Google Maps. Some of the intersection points have dots on them. Mouseover a dot and you'll get a popup pointer with the names of the two services and any Web sites that use them both in one tool mashup. Some intersections have only one tool mashup listed while some have several. Click on the dot for a summary of the mashups available. If you want to get a summary of all mashups available for a single tool, as opposed to all mashups at a particular intersection of services, click on one of the Web service names on the left. You'll get an overview page about the service as well as a list of example programs using the service and a list of mashups using the service. Comments and discussion are apparently coming in October. What you see on the front page is the LITTLE matrix. The BIG matrix has 88 services to the side and the dots are much fewer and further between. Still I liked exploring the big matrix; I learned about some Web services I had no idea existed. Extremely cool, though I think that big grid's gonna get rapidly out of hand.
