November 08, 2005Ping for Your Blog Via A SpreadsheetAutomate Excel, which is a very clever blog and you should go read it right now, had a brilliant post about building a spreadsheet that pings the ping utility of your choice. Read all about it at http://www.automateexcel.com/index.php/2005/11/07/ping_your_weblog_with_excel. Unfortunately you have to have Excel 2003 to get this to work. (When thinking of phrases I'd be walking around muttering to myself, I must admit that "I've got to upgrade Excel!" didn't even occur to me.) A second issue is that this is fairly new and it only pings one site at a time. (Plans are afoot for loops.) But I'm still linking to it because I think once it's upgraded to pinging multiple sites at once because there's one pinging utility that I see a need for -- and I don't see one out there. It's a service that pings just podcast directories/sites. Pingoat, Pingomatic, and PingShot all ping some podcast sites, but I'd like to see a service dedicated to pinging podcast indexes/listings. Hey, there is one! It's available at http://www.allpodcasts.com/PingAll/Default.aspx. But let me list a few places that it doesn't include. Maybe the Allpodcasts.com ping tool and these three can be put together on an Excel sheet, if one doesn't have an automated way to ping when their site/podcast updates?
