November 08, 2005ResearchBuzz Roundup 110805Dave Winer wants the Google API by the other big search companies without the limits. You can read about his crusade at http://www.clonethegoogleapi.com/. He notes that the Google API's restrictions makes it really tough to build something that can be widely used. Dave, I feel for you, and for the most part I agree -- but at the moment I'd settle for Google just UPDATING their Web API. (2002-08-30 and counting...) Who knows, maybe they are going to remove some of the limits. The New York Times: Just Googling It Is Striking Fear Into Companies. Apparently companies everywhere are scared of Google. The quote from Gary B. Pruitt from the McClatchy Company made me sad; I remember sitting in on demonstrations of Nando.net back in 1994, pre McClatchy ownership of the Raleigh News and observer. It was a pretty amazing service for its time. Who knows what it might have become? Bill Tancer writes in with a pointer to his blog at http://weblogs.hitwise.com/bill-tancer. His company, Hitwise, monitors user activity and then mines that information for insights on habits, interests, etc. Stat wonks will enjoy Bill's blog, which looks at things like, "Was the iPod Mini Killed too Soon"? The time that searches for prom dresses spike, and so on. Lots of charts and number breakdowns. If you want more Hitwise you can see their aggregate blog at http://weblogs.hitwise.com/.
