November 03, 2005Small Software DirectorySeems like software downloads just keep getting bigger and bigger, doesn't it? If you're nostalgic for the days when a download could fit on a flippy, or you just want some software that doesn't take an hour to get to your computer, check out TinyApps, at http://www.tinyapps.org/ . Software listed in the TinyApps directory must not exceed 1.44mb, must not be adware, and preferably should be free and ideally offer source code. Sounds good to me. The categories are on the left and include Internet, Graphics, Palm, and OS X. Listings include basic descriptions of the software as well as links to their sites. There's a series of icons that are used with the listings as well. There are two that are important for you to know about; a + means no install is necessary to use the program, while the "Green Award", a green icon at the beginning of a listing, means that a program does not require installation, does not write to the registry, and does not create or modify files outside its own directory. No, these are not full fledged suites or the kind of software that'll do everything except make pancakes. But I found quite a few useful utility-type programs here, especially in the Internet and Text categories.
