November 13, 2005Woophy Gathers Photography from Around the WorldFrom their site: "Woophy stands for WOrld Of PHotographY, a website founded by a Dutch collective of photo aficionados and internet designers who believe navigation on internet can be more visual, logical and associative." Break that down into practical terms and that means: a site, with a world map, marking over 4,000 cities with over 24,000 photos, with over 2,000 users registered. And did I mention it's a huge timesink? Find out for yourself at http://www.woophy.com. Woophy's map is not a Google Map, so you will not be able to click and drag and do other such things. Instead use the zoom and drag tools in the lower-left corner of the map. (There's also a search tab if you'd rather zoom to a specific location.) Places with pictures will be marked with small square markers. How many markers there are really depends on where you're looking at; Europe is studded with markers while there are only a few in places like Madagascar and Alaska. Click on a marker and you'll get thumbnails of photos on right side of the page. Click on one of the photos and you'll get a popup with additional information including the location of the picture, a larger version, a description, its rating, and any comments made about it. Click on the picture in the popup window and you'll get yet another popup with a full-size of the picture. In addition to the pictures there's also a tab for news, a lively discussion forum, and a photography contest that's going on until the end of November.
