December 21, 2005Getting Previews Across Several Different Ad NetworksI like this in two respects. First of all, it interests me as a Web wrangler to see what kind of ads search engines are matching to particular pages. Second, it interests me as a searcher to see the kind of context in which a page is taken. You can review potential ads from several different ad networks at http://googleadspreview.blogspot.com/. There's an overview of how it works and how to use it at http://labnol.blogspot.com/2005/12/yahoo-ypn-chitika-adsense-preview-tool.html. This page will allow you to do various ad combinations, including Google text ads, Google links, Yahoo, Chitika, Google vs. Yahoo, etc. I decided to take a page from WRAL -- a page about mountain biking championships at http://www.wral.com/interactive/4945550/detail.html. It's an easily-focused topic and I know that it's been up for a while, so it's probably been indexed. I plug the URL into the form at the top of the page, then choose the colors for the ads, etc. In the middle part of the page, you can choose what you want to see. Google text ads are the default, and these seemed contextual enough, as did the Google ad links. The image ads were weird; they were a mix of charity relief ads and biking ads. The Chitika mall results were interesting, with a broad array of ads for bikes, helmets, shoes, and magazines. The Yahoo ads were just weird -- Omaha steaks, Vonage, and pre-approved home loans. I couldn't tell if Yahoo hadn't indexed the content or if they were just a little short on mountain biking ads. Fun to play with. I was impressed with Chitika's ability to pull context and apply it to a variety of products.
