December 05, 2005Hey, A Yahoo Maps Mash Up! For Food Finding!I talk about Google Maps so much that it's nice to talk about Yahoo Maps for once. There's a really nice one, a food finder, available at http://www.macromedia.com/devnet/flash/articles/yahoo_maps/application.html. Couldn't get it to work in Opera, worked fine in Firefox. This app is simple; specify a city and state and the top of the page. The page will reload with a map of the area you specified (there's also a pretty nice "map-within-map" resource that shows a larger overview of the area which you can fold away if it blocks your view of the map.) Choose a food type on the right side of the page and you'll get pointers for restaurants; click on them and you'll get additional information including ratings, address, and phone number. Click on that and you'll be taken to an information page for the restaurant from Yahoo Local. There are additional selectors to find nearby parking, ATMs, and public transportation. This is very slick; I like the interface. Unfortunately the restaurant choices are somewhat limited (no seafood? No vegetarian?), the map is small, and the information does seem to take a while to load sometimes. On the other hand, the information and review pages from Yahoo Local are really informative and the interface is really nice.
