December 17, 2005Search Engine for Comic Strip VerbiageAnd in our "nuh-uh. Really? No, really? Cool!" Department, we have Oh No Robot, which is a search engine for the text inside online comics. This is not Calvin and Hobbes, but check it out anyway at http://www.ohnorobot.com/. You can do a simple, keyword-based search, but much more amusing is the advanced search, which lets you specify where to find your words, including in sound effects, dialog, and scene descriptions. You also specify the comics in which you want to search (there are over 225 comics in the system at this point, and a list is available.) I did a search for chicken in simple search and got 33 results. The results show the dialog from the strip, along with the URL and a direct link to the comic. Bear in mind a lot of these comics are alt. Way alt. Many of 'em aren't going to be safe for work. But what an interesting idea, and proof that you can set up advanced search options for pretty much everything.
