December 25, 2005VA Adds Names to Grave Site LocatorGovernment Computer News has noted that the Veterans Administration has added almost two million veterans' records to its grave locator -- mostly veterans buried in private cemeteries. That brings the number of names in the grave site locator up to about five million. The locator is available at http://gravelocator.cem.va.gov/j2ee/servlet/NGL_v1. (If you're interested in service members buried overseas, the site recommends that you check the American Battle Monuments Commission at http://www.abmc.gov/home.php.) The front page has a simple search that allows you to look for first name and last name. The advanced search allows you to specify a date of birth and/or death, and include a cemetery. I would have really loved an option to search by state, but that's not available. I searched for several of my relatives, and didn't find them. A search for John Smith found over 2500 results. Results include name, rank, branch of service, birth and death dates, and the name and section of the cemetery where they are.
