January 01, 2006Dictionary of Wisconsin HistoryYup, a dictionary of Wisconsin History, not an encyclopedia. This resource lists 8000 records and brought to us by the good folks at WisconsinHistory.org. An overview is available but the direct link is at http://www.wisconsinhistory.org/dictionary/. You may browse people, places, or things, or search by keywords. I searched for cheese. I got 26 results in a plain list that spanned from Babcock, Stephen Moulton 1843 - 1931 to Smith, Hiram 1817 - 1890. I clicked on cheesehead and got two definitions as well as a pointer to an brief article and a picture of the inventor of the original cheesehead hat. Most of the other entries were not this fun but the list included an extensive mix of people, companies, and concepts. Bear in mind that this appears to be a full-text search so you'll occasionally get funky results (which is why prohibition came up in a search for cheese.) I don't know if this is new or not, but WisconsinHistory.org is apparently now offering a bevy of RSS feeds; you can get a list of what's available along with descriptions at http://www.wisconsinhistory.org/syndicate.asp.
