January 01, 2006Downloadable UCS Satellite DatabaseIt's not one of those typical searchable databases -- instead it's a downloadable spreadsheet. The UCS Satellite Database, downloadable at http://www.ucsusa.org/global_security/space_weapons/satellite_database.html , contains information about 800 various satellites. It's updated "roughly quarterly," the site says. As I noted it's a downloadable file. There's also a downloadable user manual (PDF file) and a place to sign up for getting updates on the database. The file itself provides over 25 points of information, including name of satellite, country of owner/operator, purpose, type of orbit, launch mass, date of launch, expected lifetime, contractor, and comments. In addition information in the database is sourced with Web page links -- sometimes many Web page links. In addition to the database the satellite page also has an interesting graph of military vs. civilian satellites for four different countries, and pointers to a page of space weapons resources on the Web. This page includes resources in several categories including technology, treaties, and US and international policy. Posted to Science-Aeronautics | TrackBack
