February 11, 2006Yahoo/Flickr Teams Up With National Library of AustraliaYahoo and the National Library of Australia have teamed up to expand the scope of pictures available on PictureAustralia. PictureAustralia, at www.pictureaustralia.org, is a collection of more than a million images brought to you by the National Library of Australia. The number is going to increase. The NLA is working with Flickr, which is owned by Yahoo. Yahoo's Australia-New Zealand arm and the NLA are requesting that Australians add their photos to two groups on Flickr. PictureAustralia: Australia Day is described this way: "a collection of images relating to this day of national significance, and we invite all FlickR members to add their Australia Day images to this group to be made accessible through PictureAustralia." There are 150 photos available in this group. The second group is much larger. PictureAustralia: People, places and events has over 1000 photos. This one is described as "a collection of images depicting the people, places, and events, which make Australia unique." You can get more details on the project in this article from AustralianIT. It'll be interesting to see how the picture database is expanded, and if the National Library of Australia ends up making more specific requests -- "We need pictures of this area," "We'd love pictures of this event," etc.
