April 26, 2006Minnesota Offers Photograph ArchiveThe Minneapolis Star Tribune has a new story about an archive of over five thousand photographs from historical Minnesota. Minnesota Reflections is available at http://reflections.mndigital.org/. The front page allows searching by keywords or you can do an advanced search which allows you to both search by keyword and specify the collection from which the photographs should come (the photographs in the collection were pulled from over 50 collections across the state.) You can also do a field search or a keyword proximity search. If you don't feel like searching, you can also browse by the originating institution, by topic (from Agriculture to Weather), or by region (they provide a map of Minnesota and you can click on it.) I felt like searching so I searched for farming. I got 37 results presented in a grid with thumbnails of the search results. Click on the picture and you'll get a larger picture and a bunch of additional information including title, description, photographer, date of the picture (approximate), keywords, and so forth. You can zoom out from the pictures and then rotate the images and even crop the image in a new window. The photographs vary a lot, from regular old B&W to those sepia long-distance blurry things. But it's an interesting browse.
