April 02, 2006Portal of Asian-Language Cancer Information AvailableThe Asian American Network for Cancer Awareness, Research and Training and the American Cancer Society have teamed up to launch a new database of Asian-language cancer information -- the APICEM (Asian Pacific Islander Cancer Education Materials) Tool. It's available at http://www.cancer.org/acmmain/DefaultACS.aspx. The database is divided into several query boxes. You must choose a type of cancer (from "All" to Testicular Cancer), language (from Chamorro to Yapese, other languages include Thai, Chinese, Korean, Hmong, and Vietnamese. "All" and English are also options, with the announcement for the database noting that English materials are "culturally tailored for Native Hawaiian populations"), and topic (early detection, prevention, treatment, etc.) There's a keyword search at the very bottom. I did a search for Chinese-language materials on general cancer information, all topics. I got six results, all PDF files, presented in a table with document title and description, cancer type, language and topic, and agency (the document title links to the PDF itself.) If you're stymied by the agency name -- I had not idea what the CCHRC was -- look for the "Meet Our Contributors" link at the top of the page, which will take you to descriptions of the various contributing agencies. Some of the searches I did had only one or two results, though the announcement about the database said that more languages and topics would be added over time. Definitely worth a look, though I found that the most general searches were the most fruitful.
