April 09, 2006State of Pennsylvania Offers Obituary Collection... except they don't call it that, they call it a "necrology scrapbook," which is about the creepiest thing I've ever heard, so please don't mind if I just call it an obituary collection. The collection covers microfilmed scrapbooks of obituaries clipped from papers, covering 16 October 1891 to 3 March 1904. If you want to just browse the collection you can start here, but as there are over 11,000 items in the collection you might run out of patience. Instead try the advanced search at http://205.247.101.31:2005/cdm4/search.php. Enter a name for which you want to search, and go down to the collection selection at the bottom of the page and choose "State Library of Pennsylvania - Genealogy". I did a search for Ford in that collection. I got 191 results. Results are presented in a table that includes a thumbnail of the page, a list of names for that page, and a description of the collection. Click on the thumbnail for a larger version of the page. Transcriptions do not appear to be available but you can zoom in on the page; once zoomed in pages are very readable. (Wait a minute -- there have to be transcripts somewhere -- otherwise how could I be doing this full-text searching of the scrapbooks? Am I missing something?)
