May 09, 2006Browse Milwaukee History With Remember When CollectionThe Milwaukee Public Library has introduced a new feature: a digitized collection of "Remember When", a feature that ran in The Milwaukee Journal from 1963 through 1994. Over 150 of the columns are available at http://www.mpl.org/File/digital_remember_index.htm. According to an article at the Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel, eventually 450 of the columns will be available online. You can browse and search the collection directly at http://content.mpl.org/cdm4/browse.php. Remember When featured an old photograph and an extensive description, including information on the contemporary status of the area/institution/feature. Other information on each listing includes date of the original photograph, publication date of the feature, and subject heading. The descriptions are extensively hyperlinked, meaning you can do a series of searches just by browsing through descriptions. While that's a nice idea, having so many blue words is a little distracting when trying to, y'know, actually read the descriptions. This collection is very interesting; amazing old photographs of cars, cobbled streets, and buildings. Do a keyword search for mansion and look at the results you get. Interested folks can buy 300dpi TIF copies of photographs from the MPL for $10 each.
