November 19, 2001Frederick Douglass Papers Released By LOCThe Library of Congress has announced the release of the Frederick Douglass Papers at http://memory.loc.gov/ammem/doughtml/ . This collection contains approximately 2,000 items, including speeches, newspaper clippings, pamphlets, brochures, transcripts, and other items. The collection may be searched by keyword or browsed by series (series include "Family Papers, 1859-1903 and Undated," "Speech, Article, and Book File, 1846-1894 and Undated," and "Addition, 1851-1964 and Undated".) While the keyword search was all right, I found the browsing function very difficult to use. Once a series is chosen, you get a choice of subcategories. For example, choose "Miscellany, 1870-1924" and you'll get a choice of three subcategories -- Newspaper Clippings, Photographs, and Printed Matter. Choose one of those and you're dropped to the first image of however many are in that category -- I didn't see any item list for the subcategory. I also didn't see any evidence that any of the images had been transcribed. More detail in the browsing would be nice, as would transcriptions, but it's still worth a look.
