Utah Photo Collection Spans 77 Years

The Utah State Historical Society is now offering The Shipler Commercial Photographers Collection, 1903-1980 at http://history.utah.org/photos/c275/.

This online collection came about as a result of a grant from National Endowment for the Humanities to digitize 6,000 pictures in the Shipler collection (out of a collection of about 100,000 negatives.) From what I can see over 950 images have been added to the collection; more will be added over time.

The collection spans the professional work of three generations of photographers -- James, Harry, and Robert Shipler. You can browse via the browse link on the left side of the page. Browse is really basic; it puts up thumbnails of over 950 pictures in groups of 18. Click on a thumbnail and you'll get a larger version of the photograph with lots of information, including publication date, notes, address of photograph (if available), photographer, and scan date.

You can also search the collection. You may do a general keyword search, or search in the subject, place, personal name, or corporate name. You can also search by year or by collection (there's a whole collection dedicated to sunsets.) Search results are provided in groups of 18 with thumbnails, and clicking on the thumbnail provides a larger version of the photograph and additional information.

I am no great shakes at photography, but some of the building shots were absolutely wonderful. Plenty to see here; worth a look.
