September 25, 2003UK Central Government Archives LaunchedThe National Archives of the UK launched the UK Central Government Web Archive on September 24th. Currently the site preserves fifty government Web sites (though they're not all available, and you'll see in a moment) and is located at http://www.pro.gov.uk/webarchive/ . At the moment, the site says, ten archives are being archived weekly. The other ones are being archived every six months. From the front page, click the "View the Archive" link. You'll find that the ten sites which are indexed weekly are available, but the other ones are listed as being available in February 2004. The ones which are available are listed with a name and screenshot, and include the Royal Navy, the Prime Minister's office, and Department for International Development. Click on either the screenshot or the name of the site and you'll get... the Internet Archive! Well, that makes sense, no use doubling up on efforts. Anyway, you'll get a picture of the Internet archive relevant to that particular site and from there you know what to do; click on the date and you'll get the site as it appeared on that date. This'll be a lot more interesting in 2004 when all fifty sites are available. Posted in the following categories: Countries-United Kingdom
