August 25, 2003Ask Jeeves Offering "Smart Answers"Ask Jeeves ( http://www.ask.com/ ) is now offering what they're calling "Smart Search" tools for searches. From how they're described they're very similar to search shortcuts as you've seen on Yahoo, AltaVista, etc. Smart search tools were announced in April but Ask Jeeves has added a couple more. Current Smart Answers tools include zip codes, country maps, holidays, capitals, and foreign language translation. The new ones are for weather and conversions (what is it with the sudden surge of conversion tools? Did everyone feel the need to convert things all at once?) Here's how they work. Each one has a fairly basic syntax. Zip codes, for example, are found with the query "zip code for city state". So searching for "zip code for beverly hills ca" gets the response "Beverly Hills, CA uses the ZIP code 90209." and a link to all zip codes in Beverly Hills CA. Let's do another one, this time for weather. To get the weather in Beverly Hills, search for weather beverly hills ca. At the top of the search results you'll see the current conditions in Beverly Hills and a forecast. For a complete list of these smart searches and how they work, check out the press release from Ask Jeeves at TK. Posted in the following categories: Search Engines-Ask Jeeves | TrackBack
