Cook's Thesaurus Provides Food Information

Hungry? Need to work on a recipe? Check out http://foodsubs.com/ . This plain but extensive site offers a lot of information on a lot of different foods.

The front page (and indeed the entire site) contains a keyword search , a "food of the month" and a variety of categories. Some categories are food (vegetables, grains, meat, fish) and some are food- related (equipment, miscellaneous.) Pick a category and you'll get a list of subcategories and food information.

I chose liquids. I got a list of sub-categories, including juices, vinegars, and alcohol. I chose vinegars. The page I got included background information on vinegar in general, and then a listing of various kinds of vinegar, from aceto balsamico to wine vinegar. Each vinegar listing describes what the vinegar is made of, what it's good for, and what it tastes like, and what could be substituted for it (so if you don't have any coconut vinegar laying around the house you could always use cane vinegar or cider vinegar.)

Some listings are more extensive. The alcohol page, for example, has several subcategories, and beer has its own page with a variety of types (not brands) of beer listed.

I was very impressed with this site. There are a huge number of listings, pages load quickly despite a large number of illustrations, and I learned a lot.
