December 03, 2002George Washington Papers Now OnlineThe University of Virginia's Electronic Text Center has posted more than 17,400 papers from John C. Fitzpatrick's "The Writings of George Washington from the Original Manuscript Sources, 1745-1799," at http://etext.virginia.edu/washington/fitzpatrick/ . There are 37 volumes here in addition to two volumes of indexes. You may browse by volume or do a search. Search is by keyword, with additional options allowing you to narrow your search by recipient (there's a handy pop-up name index to recipients) and date range. A search for "cherry tree" found three results. Search results include the volume number, the recipient, and sometimes the date. Click on the recipient name and volume number to get the extract(s) that contain your keyword, and click on it again to get the entire letter. The keywords are highlighted in each letter. Furthermore, each letter offers a link to a bibliographic header and contains the footnotes integrated into the text (in nice green indented text so you don't miss them or mistake them for letter text.)
