National Geographic Unveils Online Digital Image Collection

I was going to cover this last week, but I could never get onto the site. It loaded up like a charm this morning, though. So. National Geographic has unveiled a collection of thousands of digital images at http://www.ngsimages.com/ . There's a log-in box on the front page but you can search and view images without registration of any sort.

The search box is on the front page allows for a simple keyword search; an advanced search link underneath allows you to search by image orientation (portrait, landscape, etc.) category (including animals, adventure, concept, natural history, and world culture), media type (color, black and white, or duotone), and license status. You can also specify the number of results you want per page (the default is nine.)

A search for "jaguar" found 22 results, which are presented as nine thumbnails per page. Click on the picture itself for a larger version, or click on one of the icons beneath the picture. The + icon will add the picture to a "light box," but you'll have to register to take advantage of this feature. Registration is free but requires name, address, phone number, and e-mail. Clicking on the i icon provides additional information about the picture, including related keywords, image ID, and related keywords. Finally, clicking on the shopping cart will give you the opportunity to purchase the picture, but again, you'll have to be registered.
